It is the technology that the fax machine uses to print received messages. Fax machines use various printing technologies: thermal, inkjet, bubblejet or laser.

Thermal technology requires the use of thermal paper rolls. Some plain paper fax machines use printing technologies found in our regular printers. Inkjet printing method shoots ink on the paper in the form of a jet, somewhat like an ink pen on paper. Bubble jet technology uses ink bubbles for printing the ink. Laser printing rolls the plain paper in toner (a dry powder type of ink) and transfers the toner onto the paper by fusion with heat and pressure.

Thermal printing is less expensive as compared to the others, but the print quality is better with inkjet, bubble jet and laser printers.

This feature removes the rough edges from the text that are very often caused during the transmission of a fax.

The documents received are as good as the original. People who need to receive high resolution documents (like designs, layouts, pictures, etc.) by fax, prefer this feature.

A telephone answering machine could be of immense use in a fax machine. When the system is set on an absence mode, depending upon the call, the fax machine automatically switches between the answering machine or fax mode. If the machine detects a fax signal, it will receive it. Otherwise the machine will send the call to the answering machine.

With an inbuilt answering machine, you are saved the hassle of manually attaching an external one.

You can activate the fax machine from a remote location.

When you are sitting in another location, away from your fax machine, this feature allows you to turn on the fax machine to receive faxes or to function as a telephone only. This is done by calling the telephone number on which the fax machine is attached and punching in the code, which activates or deactivates the fax retrieval.

This feature saves you the trouble of physically going to the fax machine to activate it.

A fax machine with this feature has the capacity to call for fax documents which may be stored in the sending slot (out-tray) of another fax machine.

If you need to receive a fax from an external fax machine, your machine has the capacity to call for fax documents, which may be stored in the sending slot (out-tray) of the other fax machine. After both the machines have been set on the polling mode (by pressing the polling button), your machine calls the remote fax machines fax and then prints it out.

This is normally used when you have to receive documents from another machine, but at your own cost. In other words, the receiving fax machine, not the transmitting fax machine initiates the transmission.

This feature is common in Fax machines that helps physically straighten the curling effect of thermal paper.

Thermal Fax machines need fax rolls (chemically treated paper obtained in the form of rolls) as printing material. The printed paper could be quite difficult to read as it curls. Some fax machines come with an anti curling system comprising of two rollers placed in a particular position to straighten (or reduce the curl on ) the paper after it has been printed on. Plain paper fax machines do not use this feature as the paper does not curl prior to (or after) the printing process.

You are able to read the faxes received on your thermal paper fax without the hindrance of the paper curling.

Allows you to block reception of faxes from parties which you specify. Faxes have a limit (about 5 numbers) to store junk fax numbers. The fax machine will not allow reception from all of these stored numbers.

This saves paper ink and valuable electricity by not printing out unwanted junk faxes.
